OneDown is a driving force in Kenya’s electronic music scene. Founder of Aduma Records and Adumapresents, OneDown has played alongside global names like Black Coffee and Shimza, with releases on top Afro house labels. Through his new imprint A-DU-MA-THING, he’s shining a light on Kenyan electronic talent worldwide. “Golden Sun” is his new track, out now on My Other Side of the Moon.
Who and who inspired you to become a DJ?
It was really no one in particular, it was just the strong urge to want to share the music I had collected over years that was considered weird where I grew up.
Which kind of music did you listen when teenager?
My teenage years were mostly dominated by the music on the radio which was dancehall, genge & some kwaito/EDM like once a week.
And now?
Now I listen to alot of the sounds falling under the electronic music spectrum, mostly Afro house & Afro Tech, deephouse & melodic House. Sometimes to unplug liquid drum & bass & ambient electronic sounds.
Which platform do you use to listen to music?
Mostly I listen on Apple Music but also on YouTube & soundcloud for the bootlegs & underground sounds.
Why is Africa becoming so important in the electronic music scene?
The diversity of cultures, people & languages in the African continent is immense. There are lots of stories to be told, emotions to be expressed, sounds & instruments to be tapped in. And even then, there’s still modern Africa to be explored. Lastly and most importantly, Africans have never been more self aware & thus they are now tuned & loving on their own sounds & artists which is in return drawing the attention of the rest of the world.
